Media Language essay 1B

Media language is the way in which the meaning of a media text is conveyed to the audience. The production that i will be analysing in this essay is the film opening which we created for our AS coursework. This production was focused on a gang who are trying to break into a bank. The genre was action comedy, therefore we made the opening fast pace using lots of different techniques like foley and different camera angles
Media language was presented through this film opening product in multiple assorted manners with the use of mise en scene, camera, sound, and editing.

Mise en Scene allowed us to empower women especially through the use of the characters costume. We did this by having the female gang member dressed exactly the same as the males, which presented her to the audience as equal to the men. The general view would be that the female would not be as dominant as the males, however we wanted to diminish this stereotype by empowering the female and making her the gang leader.  Body language also allowed us to present the idea that females can do the same jobs as men. For example the girl in the gang was able boss the other about by using  hand gestures. In relation to this, by identifying Vladimir Propps' media theory helps the audience identify the characters as a particular theme/person. For example, by having only one girl in the gang, this instantly makes the audience sympathise with this character, wanting them to succeed, however we challenged this convention in order to show that no matter conditions or gender status, you are still able to be empowered.

By the use of different camera angles and shots this allowed us to use Media Language to show the different characters in the way we wanted them to be portrayed. Within heist scene the camera is positioned to act as one of the heist members heads, this is too equality and helps the audience to invision them self in the scene. However, the camera is also used to show the characters in equal frames, this is to enhance the moral of the story that they are both equally respected despite  having different genders, this is shown in the opening scene when the characters are all standing next to each others as equals.

Using sound within this production was also a choice to be made carefully as we wanted to right message to be promoted in aid of the visuals within the film opening. For example the use of an upbeat rock song, was to foreshadow the dangerous possibilities. A lot of the beats are also in time with each scene and cut in order to have a sense rhythm to pump up the gang members for the important heist. The use of diegetic and non-diegetic sound contributes to the use of media language. For example with diegetic dialogue used this allows the audience to receive a better understanding of who the characters are and what they are doing the heist for, also seen within the visuals. With different gang members expressing different tones and attitudes allows the audience the recieve a better idea of the stereotype being used. The powerful girl uses dialogue like "pack up the van!"   which is a complete comparison to one of the lazy boys replying "uggh".

Please could i have help with this essay as i found it difficult and wasn't sure what to talk about when it came to editing.

Comments

  1. - You need to be specific about the camera shots - frame, angle, movement, which thoughts gave meaning to the action for eg the weapons and the humour behind these
    - Propp's theory is subverted in your film opening as the female is in charge
    - sound - not complete comparison, a contrast. What about the music foreshadowed the dangerous possibilities, any other dialogue?
    - editing is the transitions used, order of the narrative, pace for eg the opening with the door and that pace?
