Genre 1B essay

Genre is a very important feature in media, with certain characteristics making up trademark styles of different genres (for instance, horror films will have loud bursts of music to emphasise jump scares). This helps the audience to relate better to films, as they will be drawn in more to watch productions that have these stereotypes relating to genres that they favour.

We incorporated genre into our film opening in a multitude of ways, by using a lot of key components that tend to feature in many action films such as fast-paced music and quick cuts to emphasise the tense setting. To properly incorporate genre into our production, we used theories from Daniel Chandler and Steve Neale to help further our film opening being classed as an action/comedy film.

The editing and camerawork we did for the opening included motion blur and handheld shots with intentional shakiness to emulate the haphazard preparation of a heist. Other effects we used were cross dissolve as well as brightness and contrast to create darker, more gloomy footage that better suits our chosen theme. These traditional cuts and effects of the genre conform to the theory of Daniel Chandler, with the audience expecting this stereotypical editing style. However, we did also subvert to his theory with the characters in our film opening, as the main boss in the opening is a woman, which is very unusual especially in crime and heist themed films. This was a main drawing point of our film for audiences due to the unconventional casting choice.

We carried over the dark theme to our website that advertised the film as well, but were conscious not to make it so dark as to confuse the genre of the film with horror. Online advertising helped to expose our target audience of teens and young adults as they are more inclined to use the internet than younger children or the elderly. Steve Neale's theory is that audiences will get bored of repetition within a production, and so we balanced the synergy across the different media texts in order to keep everything related, but not so similar as to lose the attention of the people viewing.

Sound played a crucial part in the process of creating our film opening as it aided in emphasising the comical components as well as drawing attention to the climactic areas of the production. Examples of this included a record scratch stock sound and also "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks which created a theme of rebellion surrounding the characters. Foley was added to focus the audience on particular events occurring in the opening such as the pulling up of the van to the bank as well as the sound of the locked bank door, which helped to prevent a loss of attention towards the more important parts in the film opening.

  1. You don't state what your genre is at the start. Describe it.This is a very confusing essay. What films did you research to understand your genre. What is a comedy action adventure? Apply DISTINCT to your production, then refer to Neale about how you used some of his conventions and which ones you subverted and talk us through the scenes in the opening. Stop describing the theorists just apply them that's how you show you understand them.
